The Fijian Government has appointed businessman Mr Yogesh Punja to be its High Commissioner to Australia.

Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said Mr Punja's vast commercial background and skills will add much value to the work of the Ministry. His appointment demonstrates Government's commitment towards renewing and strengthening the bilateral relation between Fiji and Australia.

Ratu Inoke said the High Commissioner designate had gone through the normal process of applying for the post and interviews.

The Ministry is confident that Mr Punja will enhance Fiji's foreign policy interests in its relations with Australia given his extensive work background in both the public and private sectors.

His experience includes leading the popular Punjas Group of Companies at its New Zealand operations. Mr Punja will take up his posting in Canberra by the end of April, 2015.

Fiji has signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Australian Government, establishing Fiji’s participation in the Australian Seasonal Worker Program (SWP).

The duration of work under this program is from 14 weeks to 6 months and workers are permitted to visit their countries each season, depending on the demand for labour and the performance of the individual.

Similar to the New Zealand Recognised Seasonal Employer work scheme, the Ministry will focus on registering unemployed persons residing in rural areas of the country and registration will only be done through the Foreign Employment Centre (FORES) of the National Employment Centre (NEC).

The High Commission wishes to reiterate that no other person or employment agencies are authorised to recruit under this program and persons operating bogus employment agencies will be taken to task.  Those agencies in Australia wishing to be included in this program can contact the High Commission directly on 02 6260 5115.
